VENDREDI 26 NOVEMBRE 2004

" Mencius

“Nous descendrons incendier les villes;

Merde alors, j’aurai pu me retrouver
Dans cette enveloppe
Si je n’avais pas été si grand.

CHARLOT LUCIEN (Boston)

FROM DANIEL ULYSSE, NEW YORK.

It's refreshing to know that there are a few good men, honest, brave, sharp, firm, intelligent, fair, respectful, free & proud, like Carl Fombrun around in 2004.

Many of our elders, political figures, historians and intellectuals traded everything for favors trying to please our occupants. We will trust someone like him to negotiate on behalf for he has what it takes.

I admire Carl for his integrity and balance, he speaks the truth freely, let every views even those he disagrees with on his site. He is not an hungry opportunist ready to kiss .... or ask for favors.

I wish his good friend, Prime Minister Latortue would listen to him. The last time I look in his wish list I saw that he didn't have political ambition. Let's continue to support Carl and his endeavors.

Let's enjoy him while he still going around strong. Thank you for your piece on Vertières, please continue to excel. I am proud of you.

MY ANSWER

Dear Daniel,
Mine! Mine! I appreciate every word of it. Short and sweet! This was a great Thanksgiving gift to me, considering the source.

All the best,

Carl

TO DANIEL ULYSSE FROM GUY EVANS FORD

Brother Man:

Has it occurred to you that the inability of so-called concerned Haitian- politicians to have a tête-à-tête, devoid of egotistical personal interests, is in part or in whole, the cause of our demise? Such deficiency, in political and patriotic character, justify the fact that for a long time -although we are in denial- we have been under an officious protectorate.

Of course, these guys have no other alternative than to listen to “Blan,” (white man) because “Blan” (white man) runs their lives. To claim sovereignty, a nation has got to have people willing to consent the sacrifice of their egos and personal ambitions for the common cause. Do you really believe that a peaceful or successful transition is possible as we face a divided nation and an ever-deepening socio-political cleavage?

If we are serious about attaining the elusive ETAT DE DROIT, we must not engage in finger pointing that will only contribute to a more pronounced alienation and division of all those who must come together to gradually neutralize the influence of foreigners in Haitian politics.

Finally, until we are able to convene our individual and collective torts without seeking scapegoats, we will never, never be able to curb or minimize the power of money in the CIVIC aspect of Haitian politics.

Love, Peace, and Togetherness to you, my Brother! Happy Thanksgiving Day!

FROM FRITZ MONDÉ

Carl,

Today, as well as yesterday, my wife, Michaelle and the kids have been with me. I'm glad because it fills a tremendous void that could have been a lonely holiday. I'll dine with my cousin Yanick Augustin, whom we call Fifie, and the children will be with me.

Today I give thanks and praise the Lord that he has seen fit to keep our little family together. The laughter of children and the warmth of company makes today a thankful day.

Carl, on my behalf and that of my family I wish you and your spouse a thankful celebration and a Happy Thanksgiving. Let us keep in our thoughts Haiti and those less fortunate in the world, especially the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who may not know peace today.

To all of “Carl’s Corner,” Happy Thanksgiving,

Sincerely,

Fritz Mondé et al

FROM VANESSA DICKEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE SIMÉUS FOUNDATION, DALLAS , TEXAS.

Dear Friends,

For those of you who do not know Ritchy, his story is one that will touch your soul. One day in early 2001, Mr. Siméus and I were walking through the street market in Saint-Marc with some doctors who were visiting from the U.S. Suddenly, we looked up and saw Ritchy right in front of us.

He was hobbling along on his crutches behind a group of boys who were running through the market. It was obvious that this little boy was in pain and was suffering. Notwithstanding his pain, he courageously struggled on, determined not to be left behind. We stopped Ritchy and asked about his injury. His eyes seemed to say, “Please help me.” We knew then and there that we had to do something.

For three years, we searched in vain for a solution. Now, we are happy to share with you that Ritchy has been accepted for orthopedic surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. It is very rare that the hospital goes against its charter to accept foreign patients. We are fortunate that Scottish Rite will perform the surgery free of charge.

The traveling expenses for Ritchy to come to the U.S. and his living and rehabilitation expenses for 6 to 12 months after the surgery will be extensive. Those will be paid by The Siméus Foundation. We would like to thank our friends who attended the fundraising reception held last Friday evening in Dallas to benefit Ritchy.

We also would like to include in our thanks those friends who could not come, but sent donations and various items to be auctioned. The fundraising is still open for those of you who would like to participate.

Ritchy has lived with this pain since he was injured as a baby. The Siméus Foundation sponsored Ritchy’s education and medical care in Haiti for the last three years and now, thanks to the good people at Texas Scottish Rite, he will soon receive the treatment he needs to relieve the pain and be able to walk like a regular kid.

He arrives in Texas the second week of January 2005 escorted by Ms. Yolène Polidor-Exilus, The Siméus Foundation’s Administrator in Haiti.

Mr. Siméus was in Haiti last week and visited with Ritchy who is very excited about his forthcoming trip to the U.S. and the surgery. We’ll keep you updated on Ritchy’s progress. Thanks again to all of you for your support. Like Ritchy, The Siméus Foundation appreciates your prayers and support.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Dickey

ALARMING INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF RAPES. Haiti Support Group press release, 25 November 2004 (extracts).

In an Associated Press report dated 22 October, human rights lawyer Renan Hédouville, from the Comité des Avocats pour le Respect des Libertés Individuelles (CARLI), was quoted as saying, "In the month of August, for example, more than 50 cases of rape by former military were reported to our hot line."

On making a presentation to a visiting delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Mr. Hédouville said that his organization had received reports of women and young girls being raped in many of the troubled areas in Port-au-Prince, with the most reports coming from Bel Air.

Mr. Hédouville denounced the violations committed by former members of the disbanded Haitian Army (FAd'H), whose rebellion overthrew the Aristide/Neptune government in February, and who have since been agitating for the re-instatement of the FAd'H.

The reported increase in rape reported to CARLI was confirmed by the recent figures released by health centres run by GHESKIO (Groupe Haïtien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infections Opportunistes). In the three months, July to September, 81 women - all under the age of 30 - were admitted to GHESKIO centres for treatment and counselling following sexual assaults. The majority of assaults took place in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince.

According to GHESKIO, 54% of rapes are committed by armed men in the victim's home. CARLI's Hédouville says that the violence is being committed against women and young girls in poor neighbourhoods in other parts of the country, as well as in the capital.

A UNICEF team deployed to the city of Gonaïves from 20 October to 2 November reported a "problem of rape of teenage girls", but further details are as yet unavailable. Despite the presence of UN troops, Gonaïves has remained under the de facto control of armed gangs since the uprising at the beginning of 2004.

-en silencio-

La distancia se hace corta;
un muro frío nos separa..,
tú en mi corazón,
yo en el tuyo.

Recuerdos de un pasado
que cada vez es más lejano..,
aquellos días, aquellas horas,
que juntos compartimos un día.

Ahora solo son recuerdos latentes
albergados en nuestro interior..,
antaño tuvieron vida,
tuvieron sentido.

Fueron la más importante
de toda mi existencia..,
cuando ni siquiera habían nacido,
cuando ni siquiera pensaba
que algún día serían pasado.

En silencio, desde aquí,
me despido de cualquier
sentimiento de amor..,
.., hacia tí...
