Santa Claus has come early to Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church. Arun Krishna Puri, a Miami real estate developer, gave $300,000 dollars to church officials boosting a flagging campaign to build a new church with its largest donation ever.
Over the past quarter century, Haitians have worshipped at Notre Dame. Notre Dame is the spiritual and cultural hub of Little Haiti, and it has outgrown its current building. “One thing that I always believe is that God provides” Reverend Reginald Jean-Mary said. He added “The gift is a confirmation that God is working with us.”
“Arun Krishna Puri made the gift in honor of his mother. He does not want to comment on his recent action, preferring instead to stay out of the spotlight,” Reverend Reginald Jean-Mary said. Arun Krishna Puri currently is in New Delhi, India, caring for his mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.
Arun Krishna Puri , 60, made his fortune from real estate and the sale of successful clothing lines in Europe. Puri was shown a video of a weeklong spiritual revival that drew thousands of Haitians to Notre Dame earlier that month. Puri saw Haitian parishioners, singing, chanting and praising God while swaying to Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
The new church is expected to house 1,500 people. The main sanctuary is expected to become a parish hall and community center, named after Puri’s mother, Chander Mukhi Puri. The total cost will be $4,000,000 dollars. “Puri is going to give additional money to this project. This is the beginning of a relationship,” said his friend Tome Equels, a Miami trial lawyer. Equels added: “ We build the church one person and one miracle at a time.”

Dear Carl:
There are truths that are universal, they belong to the one truth that we are all part of. They will work for you either if you believe them or not, either if you are a man of faith or not; whatever your faith is, they will work for you. There are truths that need to be revealed and talked about yet still not all truths are good to reveal.
I am speaking this one truth now about Haiti because I want people to hear it. I am feeling the pulse of the nation in the talk of the people, in the way they respond to crisis; I can say that what I am feeling is not good.
Haiti needs a leader, someone who can turn the country around from the path of destruction, taking the bull by the horns so to speak and turn it around 360 degrees. Most of us are familiar with terms such as crossing the lines, the cardinal sin; these terms can be well applied to the situation in Haiti.
The Haitian people have crossed the lines and they are well on their way to destruction, they will cease to exist as a nation, as a collective, as a people, if they continue in the same path. They have committed the one unforgiving sin that set them apart from other sinners, they worship the dead.
Unless God raises some one to champion the cause of the Haitian people, they will soon cease to exist as a nation; they will be negated, they will be a used to be nation, reminiscing the grandeurs of the past, like the Kurds, remnants of the old Ottoman empire that used to be.
Haiti is well on its way to cease to exist as a nation unless there is a deep revival. The seed for dissolution is there is waiting, like Rome before its final days as an empire the people were doing unspeakable evil, rejecting all sense of righteousness “the stone that was rejected became the principal stone”, rejecting God is the cause, embracing God and His ways is the solution.
We cannot share in the abundance of this life. Simple mathematics, without righteousness, there is no justice, if there is no justice, therefore no peace, there is no peace, therefore no prosperity. Prosperity is directly proportionate to peace and peace is directly proportionate to justice.
There is a war taking place and it is been waged in the heavens for the soul of the country of Haiti as a nation. Haiti is waiting for a champion, someone who will take up the cause to establish law and justice, redirect the path of Haiti from destruction to justice and righteousness.

SPIRIT PLANS TO FLY
TO HAITI IN 2007
Spirit Airlines plans to begin flights to Haiti from Fort Lauderdale in April, its president says. Spirit Airlines has received approval from the U.S. government to fly to Haiti from Fort Lauderdale, the local low-cost carrier's president and CEO said Friday.
Spirit plans to start daily flights to Port-au-Prince in April, Ben Baldanza said during an interview with The Miami Herald on Friday.''By census count there are almost 100,000 Haitians living in Broward,'' Baldanza said. ``Everyone we've spoken with is really excited about us choosing there.''
The Miramar-based carrier is awaiting official approval from the Haitian government, but Baldanza said the government has so far ''warmly welcomed'' the carrier to the island.The Miramar-based carrier also plans to begin service to Caracas, Venezuela, in April. Those plans are also pending approval of the Venezuelan government.
''Both cities we feel deserve better low fares,'' Baldanza said.
Because the airline hasn't yet starting selling tickets, Baldanza said he couldn't provide actual prices. But he added, ``We expect that the people of Haiti and those who live here and travel to those countries will be extremely happy with the products we will offer.''
American Airlines, the dominant carrier from South Florida to the Caribbean, currently has four flights a day from here to Port-au-Prince -- three from Miami and one from Fort Lauderdale. But Haitian community leaders like Marlene Bastien say they have been frustrated of late by high fares charged by American Airlines to fly to the island.
''That's good news,'' said an excited Bastien, executive director of Haitian Women of Miami, when told of the news on Friday. ``The prices have been prohibitive and there's no reason why someone has to pay $400 for a two-hour flight. It will really facilitate family members going back and forth and maintaining important relationships with their loved ones.''
American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said the base fare from South Florida to Haiti would be about $289 round trip -- with taxes, about $370 -- in April, when the Spirit flights are set to begin. ''We're the leading carrier in that market right now and we'll do our best to stay that way,'' Wagner said, adding he thinks the carrier has a ''very loyal following'' in Haiti and the rest of the Caribbean.
Air France also flies from Miami to Port-au-Prince.
Spirit, which is based in Miramar, currently serves 12 cities in the Caribbean and Latin America, including Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas.
It has also filed for approval to fly to St. Maarten.

Although, personally, a privileged passenger, paying a poultry sum, a nominal fee to travel anywhere with those airlines, being a veteran in the airlines business, the time has come to release the stranglehold that AMERICAN AIRLINES has over Haitian passengers. The name of the game should be competition, not a monopoly held by one corporation. That’s the American way.
Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet will be harshly judged by history. For anyone to excuse Pinochet’s tyrannical rule over Chile by murder and torture because he “saved” his country is the same as saying that Hitler and Mussolini “saved” Germany and Italy from communism and chaos. L’économiste Michèle Pierre-Louis, l’écrivain Frankétienne et le musicien Lenord Fortuné Azor ont été désignés « Trésors Nationaux Vivants » d’Haïti pour l’année 2006, informe un communiqué transmis à AlterPresse.
Ce titre a été décerné à ces trois personnalités par un jury mis en place, dans le cadre d’une initiative lancée par la Fondation Françoise Canez Auguste et la firme Image et Marketing.
Le titre de Trésor National Vivant a été créé cette année en Haïti sur le modèle du « Living National Treasure » institué au Japon depuis 1950. « Ce titre récompense chaque année des personnes reconnues pour leur grande contribution à l’avancement du pays », précise le communiqué.
La Fondation Françoise Canez Auguste et Image et Marketing entendent, par cette mention, « célébrer de leur vivant des citoyens ou des citoyennes haïtiennes qui ont marqué positivement l’histoire d’Haïti pendant ces vingt dernières années de façon à en faire une source d’inspiration pour les autres ».

En apparence, elles se ressemblent... Hillary Clinton et Ségolène Royal sont deux femmes, susceptibles d'être élues présidentes, ce qui, aux États-Unis comme en France, est une première. Elles associent, dit-on souvent, une vision sociale progressiste à une conception conservatrice de la famille et de l'éducation et occuperaient donc une position comparable en politique : grosso modo, à droite de la gauche. Des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, on voit parfois en Ségolène une Hillary à la française.
Les apparences sont trompeuses. En réalité, Hillary et Ségolène ont peu de choses en commun. Pour établir une comparaison valable, superposons d'abord l'éventail des partis politiques aux États-Unis et en France, ceux qui comptent vraiment dans les élections. On s'aperçoit que l'éventail américain est beaucoup plus étroit et centriste que le français : à droite, pas de formation importante équivalente au Front national ; à gauche, pas de mouvements révolutionnaires qui auraient de l'influence. Les extrêmes existent, mais ne pèsent pas sur l'électorat. Chez les démocrates, personne ne songerait à se dire « antilibéral ». Au contraire de Ségolène, Hillary n'aura donc pas à composer, sur sa gauche, avec des ovnis se réclamant encore du communisme ou du trotskisme.
L'économie ? Le social ? La démocrate Hillary Clinton défend sans ambiguïté le libre-échange et l'esprit d'entreprise. Elle ne risque pas, là non plus, d'être plombée par les syndicats qui, aux États-Unis, se battent pour l'emploi et la protection sociale, mais sont soucieux de la croissance et de la santé des entreprises. Et si elle continue à préconiser l'extension des assurances médicales, Hillary a aussi approuvé, en 1996, la loi de Bill Clinton qui mettait fin aux allocations prolongées pour les indigents, remplacées par un « retour au travail pour tous ». On est loin du socialisme français. La sécurité ? Dans la lutte contre le terrorisme, Hillary a, par deux fois, approuvé le controversé Patriot Act (qui limite certaines libertés civiles). Sur le plan pénal, elle soutient la peine de mort, heureusement inacceptable pour tous les partis français de gouvernement (ce qui la placerait en France à droite de la droite). Quant à l'immigration clandestine, Hillary n'a pas de mots assez sévères pour la condamner : elle préconise le renforcement des frontières et fustige les employeurs qui embauchent des illégaux. Mais elle s'inscrit aussi dans la grande tradition démocrate en faveur de l'intégration des minorités : elle défend « l'action affirmative », coup de pouce à l'embauche ou à l'entrée à l'université en faveur des Noirs et des Hispaniques. Cette position est en général condamnée par le Parti socialiste français. En politique étrangère ? C'est d'abord la méthode qui distingue Hillary Clinton et Ségolène Royal. La sénatrice de New York a suivi un long apprentissage de la géopolitique. Depuis plusieurs années, elle est très active au sein de la commission des Forces armées. Hillary y est très appréciée pour sa compétence, notamment pendant les auditions publiques (et télévisées) des membres du gouvernement, et pour la cohérence de ses positions, attitude que l'on ne peut s'empêcher de remarquer après le voyage contesté de Ségolène Royal au Moyen-Orient.
Sur le fond, Hillary n'est pas une « colombe ». Elle a approuvé la guerre du Kosovo, soutenu l'intervention en Afghanistan et voté l'autorisation au recours à la force en Irak, même si, depuis, elle juge désastreuse la conduite des opérations. Ses choix stratégiques sont guidés par les impératifs de sécurité mais aussi par une vision morale : Hillary croit à la responsabilité des démocraties vis-à-vis des peuples opprimés ; elle ne transige pas sur la nécessité d'une armée puissante, la fidélité aux alliances, l'importance de l'Otan et la garantie à la sécurité d'Israël.
Dans le débat qui agite la société américaine sur les questions religieuses, les positions de Hillary Clinton sont celles d'une croyante fervente. Elle demande l'égalité des droits pour les homosexuels mais s'oppose au mariage gay ; elle défend la liberté de l'avortement, mais encourage les parents à enseigner l'abstinence à leurs enfants.
Laissons de côté ces questions morales et religieuses, qui seront, et c'est heureux, quasi absentes de la campagne électorale française. Mais si on récapitule les positions de Hillary Clinton concernant l'économie (un marché dynamique mais régulé), la protection sociale (récompenser d'abord le travail tout en développant la solidarité envers les plus vulnérables), la sécurité et l'immigration (fermeté mais non xénophobie), ou même l'action affirmative et la politique étrangère, on s'aperçoit qu'en France, Hillary ne serait pas une femme de gauche. Une évidence s'impose, au-delà des images, des postures et de la solidarité féminine : le plus proche équivalent français de Hillary Clinton ne serait pas Ségolène Royal, mais... Nicolas Sarkozy
