WEEKDAY 7.15 a.m.

ON WPBR 1340 AM, 28 June ‘O7

In 1957, I brought with me a young Haitian, who desired to be a pilot,  to a La Guardia Airport flying class in New York, to be told by a racist instructor that minorities were not allowed and to please clear the room, or he would be obliged to call the cops.

It took more than 50 years to see that dream come true in flying colors.  How sweet it is !

Thank you Barrington Irving.  I only wish you were Haitian, but you are still from the Caribbean family.

All the best,

Dear Carl:

On a recent trip to Haiti I documented visits with partner communities. This was my first time ever, filming anything but I am really happy to say that some young filmakers at Global Giving have turned my amateurish first try and have turned them into really good short video clips promoting our work. These videos have now been entered into the Global Givng Film Festival. If we get enough votesm we win first prize, which will help us do even more in Haiti. Please go to  http://www.karmatube.org/ff/index.php

and cast your vote for our incredible videos:

1) Pigs - Haitian Bank Accounts
2) Reforestation and Clean Water in Haiti

Please forward this to your friends and encourage them to vote too! Deadline to vote is June 29.

Thank you so much

REMARKS FROM

PASHA

Hello my dearest big brother Carl,

It was such an honor for Jimmy Moise and me, Le P’tit Club and Espace Brandt, to recognize you as one of the 5 recipients of the “Master DJ Award 2007”.

We started this well deserved recognition last year in order to thank important personalities who promote selflessly our Diaspora culture.

This award was named after one of the most humble and pioneer radio personality of our “Haiti Chérie”: Georges Hérard-Lys known as Master DJ.

Georges, Jean Camille, Mohamed Moretta and I were among the youngest radio MCs in the early 70s, and we were all good friends. Georges was at his dad’s station “Radio Port-au-Prince”, where Jacques Sampeur was the program director.  Georges Hérard-Lys excelled, and quickly became one of the most respected in his field of international popular music.

The first to introduce French rap on the radio, Georges never stopped bringing to his public new artists and music genres of all kind, also becoming the First Haitian rapper in both French and English but most importantly in CREOLE.

In the early 80s, he opened Tropic FM of which he was the program director, and continued to innovate by having the first American style morning show “Jungle Tropicale.” In essence, GEORGES HÉRARD LYS, was the father of the rap movement in Haiti, and left us due to HIV in the late 80s. We all miss him very much but his immeasurable legacy will endure for ever.

The other recipients of the 2007 “Master DJ Award” at your side are:

Benoit Menasche, art director of the Pembroke Pines City Hall.

Julie Mansfield, City of Miami director of film, art and culture.

Rev. Kanela Barton, tireless advocate Haitian culture advancement.

Patrice Destin, Haitian Public Relations extraordinaire.

REMARKS FROM CARL

Dear Pasha and Jimmy,

Thanks for this honor in being ranked with other well known personnalities. In the late fifties, I knew ANTOINE HÉRARD, Georges Hérard’s father of Radio Port-au-Prince .  JACQUES SAMPEUR is an old acquaintance, and we have interviewed each other on radio and television over the years, in Haiti and South Florida.

Too bad that such a promising life, as young GEORGES HÉRARD-LYS, had to be destroyed at an early stage, but with his accomplisments he has become immortal, and an icon.

All the best,

Castro's head worth 150,000 dollars, say CIA files

Published on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

WASHINGTON, Cuba (AFP):  The CIA offered 150,000 dollars to Mafia figures to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro, just one of several CIA plots against foreign leaders detailed in 693 pages of classified US documents released Tuesday.

Other targets of CIA targets, long alleged but only now revealed in the intelligence agency's own documents, included Congo independence leader Patrice Lumumba as well as dictator of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo.

The documents also detail apparently illegal government spying on US citizens opposed to the Vietnam War and on prominent journalists in the 1970s, as well as experiments using drugs on unsuspecting subjects.

Among the CIA files is a lengthy memo which exposes the agency's recruitment of top mafia figures already wanted for crimes in order to assassinate Cuba's communist leader.

"The mission target was Fidel Castro," said the 1973 document.

According to the memo, the man chosen for the "sensitive mission requiring gangster-type action" was one Johnny Roselli -- in reality Santos Trafficant, head of mafia Cuba operations.

He recruited a second man for the mission called Sam Gold, whom the CIA discovered was actually Salvatore "Momo" Giancana, head of the Chicago mob and "successor to Al Capone."

Both were on the US attorney general's ten most-wanted fugitives list, according to the memo.  "It was to be made clear to Roselli that the United States Government was not, and should not, become aware of this operation," it said.

The mafiosi recommended against the use of firearms to kill Castro, it said, and suggested instead "some type of potent pill that could be placed in Castro's food or drink."

"Sam indicated that he had a prospective nominee in the person of Juan Orta, a Cuban official who had been receiving kick-back payments from the gambling interests, who still had access to Castro, and was in a financial bind," the memo said.

Roselli gave Orta the pills, but "After several weeks of reported attempts, Orta apparently got cold feet and asked out of the assignment."  "Roselli made it clear he did not want any more for his part and believed Sam would feel the same way.

"Neither of these individuals were ever paid out of Agency funds," the document said.  The assassination was meant as a prelude to the disastrous invasion of Cuba's Bay of Pigs.  The documents declassified Tuesday were dubbed the CIA's "family jewels," denoting the importance of their secrecy.

They detail surveillance of Americans who opposed the Vietnam War; opening personal mail to and from China and the Soviet Union, including four letters to actress Jane Fonda; break-ins on the properties of former CIA employees; wiretapping of journalists' telephones and experiments using drugs on unsuspecting subjects.

These acts were all part of the CIA's snooping in the 1970s, even though the agency is forbidden to conduct intelligence gathering on US soil.

Also revealed are plans to assassinate the Congo's anti-colonial Lumumba, who was overthrown in a 1960 coup long believed backed by the CIA, and Dominican Republic strongman Trujillo, who was shot dead by political opponents in 1961.

The files were assembled by then-director of the CIA James Schlessinger, after the agency was implicated in the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of president Richard Nixon in 1974.

"The documents provide a glimpse of a very different time and a very different agency," said CIA director Michael Hayden announcing the release last week.

"Much of it has been in the press before, and most of it is unflattering, but it is CIAs history," he said.

Bahamas accord with Haiti under review

Published on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

NASSAU, Bahamas (BIS): The 1995 accord between the governments of The Bahamas and Haiti is currently under review, the Senate was told.

Bahamas Minister of State for Immigration, Senator Elma Campbell. BIS Photo

Senator Elma Campbell, Minister of State for Immigration, said the Bahamas government is reviewing the accord “as we look at establishing a policy which will permit Haitian nationals to qualify for legal permanent status in our country.”

Campbell was speaking during debate in the Senate on the government's $1.5 billion budget for fiscal year 2007-'08.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and Haitian President Rene Preval met recently in Washington, D.C., when a number of issues were discussed.

The Senator also announced that the government is to introduce by the end of 2007, a new form of coded work permit.

It is expected this “will reduce” any suggestion that they are being duplicated illegally, she said. Campbell said the Department of Immigration receives, on a weekly basis, an average of 500 applications for work permits, residency and citizenship.

“There is an unbelievable backlog of pending applications,” she stated. “As at May 14th this year, there remained outstanding some 3,500 applications for work permits, some 1,200 for citizenship and some 1,500 for residency.

“In keeping with the government’s commitment to process all applications for citizenship, naturalization, permanent residency and other categories of residency in a timely, transparent and expeditious manner, my department has commenced the compilation and review of all outstanding applications, in an effort to expedite these applications, where possible, in the shortest period of time.

“When this is completed, we will be better able to advise the public on reasonable, realistic time frames in which one might expect not only these outstanding applications to be processed, but also of a realistic turn-around time for new applications,” she said.

Campbell also pointed out some of the initiatives the Department of Immigration is considering in an effort to expedite the processing of applications for citizenship, naturalization, permanent residency and other categories of residency.

Henry Delva.

RECU DU

DR. ROGER QUALO

New York

La Page Sociale de la Semaine: Une Société de Gro Zouzouns - Le Marchandage

Universitaire

Allo Carl,
