Hello Carl,
It's good to be getting your commentaries again! Your biography never ceases to intrigue me and your revelation and commentary regarding the corporate world titled "Happy Labors Day" blew me away. I had to forward that to a couple of my friends and it’s been circulating around the "cyber space". As a matter of fact, from time to time I forward your e-mails to my friends, family, American, Haitian and international.
I must admit that along with the informative subjects I enjoy on Haiti, the Diaspora, international and domestic issues, I am also entertained to recognize people and family that I know in your commentaries.
I have already joined the myriad of fans that has the utmost admiration and respect for who you are and what you do for the Haitian community. As far as I am concerned  you are a true hero and leader in that respect. With all the trial and tribulation you come out shining like a gem! I hope you have considered writing a biography. No doubt, a future best seller!!!
Thank you Carl, I will always appreciate you!!!

Dear Carl,

Regarding your remarks on WPBR 1340AM West Palm Beach, Florida and relayed on www.glaxieintertv.com  Monday 01 October 2007 CARL’S CORNER, it is true that NEPOTISM is here and I have seen it in both the U.S. and Haiti. Don't be too hard on yourself. At least you were world wise and fluent in Spanish. You had a very active social life, thus knowing how to behave and represent your country at an official reception. But my dear friend, from Clinton to this day, both in Haiti and here, it has gone from bad to worst. Mind you, NEPOTISM with a friend/family with a diploma, and consequently can do the job, is more or less acceptable to the function of government. But in these banana republics of ours (Haiti and Miami), it is to the detriment of the people, the taxpayers, when you have scandals in Housing, in Grant Allocations,  mismanagement of public funds, slum lords with contacts/family in government, “elatriye” etc....

As for Haiti, “podyab!”, the government is their personal business inherited from their parents to use and abuse as they wish. Check on the clerks at our Consulates or Embassies. They don't need to be "Einstein", but it would help if they had some lessons on Customer Service. As in all offices in government here and there, they forget that OUR TAX MONEY is their reason for being! THEY ARE PUBLIC SERVANTS! Their lovers, brothers/sisters, cousins, (parenn/marenn) should let them be fired if they are evaluated to be non-compliant with the office rules and regulations. This goes beyond NEPOTISM!

Your father would have had you hung on the Champ-de- Mars if you had disgraced your post!

Just a thought with love to all!

Dear Carl,
The Haitian community in Miami has a strong voice in Marleine Bastien.  Marleine Bastien has been championing causes for the Haitian community for a very long time and has used every ounce of her strength, all of her connections as well as her fierce tenacity as a strong Haitian woman and leader to stand up for those who cannot or know not.

When we have leaders such as this championing our causes, we must and should stand by them in all possible ways, support them and even when not in their presence to stand up for them and for their causes as their causes are in effect the causes of our people. We sometimes put many issues  aside based on location, ethnicity, or class separation, and sometimes we even ignore important issues if it does not affect our own pockets, our own families or our own constituency. If you read the article below, and the comments made about Haitians, many of you would be astonished. Some of you may even agree with the comments and others will turn a blind eye due to the fact that it has nothing to do with you, your class or your location. Thank goodness there are Bastiens, Metelluses, Foresters, Hermatins, and otherwise...

Saturday Speak-up. Haitian Acitivist, Marleine Bastien, riles Bitchy Commissioner Natacha Seijas! by Geniusofdespair

Marleine Bastien, prominent Haitian Activist and passionate speaker got under the vile Natacha Seijas' skin at last night's budget meeting, according to a Miami Herald article, this was the exchange:

''I'm sick and tired of coming and standing up here every year for you to help us -- you do not,'' said Marleine Bastien, Director of the Haitian Women of Miami. ``You prefer to play politics, using our tax dollars to pay your political cronies, people who do your elections, using our tax dollars as payback.''That prompted a stern response from Commissioner Natacha Seijas, who said she has supported Bastien and ``voted for things that had to do with the Haitians.''

''I don't have cronies,'' Seijas said. ``I don't have people I pay back.''

An angry exchange followed, in English and Spanish:
Bastien: ``Who that has feet, let them wear them.''
Seijas: ``I don't have feet and I don't wear it . . . You need to stop insulting us, or at least me.''

Of course you don't have feet vile Natacha. Your feet are in the pockets of your developer friends with the rest of you. Isn't it amazing that EVERYONE, who is on the right side of ANY issue, fights with Natacha? Thanks Marleine for standing up to the battle-axe and for speaking the truth.

I cannot say that I am shocked by some of the stereotyped and racist comments of many here...many of whom are religious people who probably bend their knees to prayer or attend church services seeking forgiveness from higher power. In reading the remarks here, I am again assured that racism and stereotypes come from ignorance and fear. It is amazing that Haitians are blamed for garbage dumping when this was not even the issue of this article and BLOG and if one were to digress from the issue, one could easily find every race and ethnic background in MIAMI-DADE COUNTY that is adding to the deplorable state of the county from drug dealing, prostitution, insurance scams, murder, robbery, child abuse, spousal abuse.

What is this animosity against us Haitians? Is it solely based on media coverage, or is it skin color and immigration issues? Naked hate? How can Americans and other ethnicities even talk about Haitians going back to Haiti when many are immigrants themselves or are descendants of immigrants who created ghettos upon their arrival, survived in America and turned many ghettos into thriving neighborhoods?

Should Haitians not have the same chance at the American dream and ideal as others?   Haitians should go back and fix Haiti? ...If we are to go back and fix Haiti, we have to take many Americans with us who have been the culprits in destroying Haiti...from corporations to Congress people to Presidents and CIA to tourists and military personnel.

How about we all go back and fix what we broke? Know your history. I know mine. And believe me, if the economic advantages that were taken from Haiti were actually given back along with a promise of no more covert operations and corporate sweat shops backed by the US government, the amount of Haitians returning to Haiti would be staggering. We have economically contributed to the economics of Miami through businesses, homeownership, tax dollars, and employment in major areas of the community.

Respect is due to Marleine Bastien for her tenacious attitude, her drive and her willingness to stand for Haitians in the face of adversity, racism and Miami's Economic, Educational and Political Terrorism on Haitians!

HAITI AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Two Worlds

Out of my many trips to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, since age 9, there are three unforgettable moments.

The first time was in 1941 traveling by car from Haiti with my father Charles Fombrun, Haitian Secretary of State, to “Ciudad Trujillo” which was the name of the Dominican Republic’s capital in those days.

The second time was in December 1985 where I was chosen as Best Man to a Haitian-Dominican wedding, in the little town of Bonao, Dominican Republic.

And the third time, in the spring of 1994, as a guest at the luxurious Casa de Campo resort in the town of La Romana, Dominican Republic, at a Dominican-Haitian wedding.

In 1941, the purpose of the trip was to visit my older brother Marcel, who was the First Secretary of the Haitian Mission in Dominican Republic.

In 1985, at the Haitian-Dominican wedding in the town of Bonao, Dominican Republic,  the Dominican and Haitian people were friendly, and their warm hospitality was always present ... The old political rivalry among the common people, Haitians and Dominicans, was non existent and the Spanish and Creole languages flowed freely. Haitians and Dominicans mixed easily in Spanish, English, French and Creole. This was a memorable event, which I enjoyed greatly. The groom, a Haitian-American, was a ramp service person in Eastern Airlines at Miami International Airport, and I was happy to be an important part of this special day for him.

In 1994, the other Dominican-Haitian wedding took place at the luxurious Casa de Campo resort in Dominican Republic, the ultimate in luxury from the main cathedral in the town of La Romana where literally a red carpet was extended outside and inside for guests, and a formal reception, where expensive Dominican cigars were available and non-stop Dom Perignon champagne was served to guests. I was seated with the bride's relatives and the conversation was flowing in Spanish, French and English. Seated at my right, I had a Dominican gentleman who then asked me where I was from. I told him I was from Haiti. He did a double take and looked back at me again, surprised, as if I had just told him I came off a UFO. I thought this was a Dominican-Haitian wedding but the only one who seemed to acknowledge Haiti, as my birth country, was myself. The bride was Haitian as well as her family but no one would mention it. I then realized that Spanish and English were spoken and some French, but no Creole. It was obvious that this attitude was due to avoid historical cultural stress between two groups. Class, color, and cultural differences were sadly the priorities at that event.

The world would be so much better were it not for the small minds that pollute it. These latest remarks are not intended to criticize any particular group. In the Haitian-Dominican historical rivalry both sides have been guilty of irrational behavior. In cosmopolitan Miami today there are times I am not recognized, or accepted, as a Haitian by some Haitians themselves, although I have always told everyone since high school days of my being Haitian. I do however like to think of myself as a citizen of the world with Haitian roots. The overwhelming majority of Haitians are of African descent with some, who are racially mixed with original native “tainos”, and white Europeans who did occupy Haiti once.

The best solution for the human race is to turn this planet into a multi-racial society which will in the long run benefit everyone. We Haitian-Americans, living here among multiple cultures from all over the world could give the example; strength through good will and unity among us.

God bless America which, unless unforeseen events, is slowly but surely becoming a multi-racial nation after a troubled past in race relations.  The whole world still has a long way to go and the U.S.A., regardless of its past and present racial sins, is leading the way. That's what makes America great; commitment to a better tomorrow. " Rayi chen, di dan yo blansh ", a creole expression meaning: “You may not like  dogs, but you must agree that their teeth are white”. In other words, in every human being there are good things.

MISSION AND PURPOSE

The Haitian American Historical Society (HAHS) is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit organization with the support of numerous public officials at the local, state and federal level. HAHS is dedicated to fully investigate any past instances where Haitian contributions have been identified. The organization seeks to establish truth and accuracy in historical events pertaining to Haitians and those of Haitian descent. This bold and ambitious goal will allow current and future generations to understand and appreciate the role and contributions of Haitians to American Society and other parts of the world. This is especially important for the next generation who are on the verge of losing their identities and connection to Haiti. It is our hope HAHS will promote understanding and positive cooperation between Haitians, Haitian-Americans and others of African descent toward a better appreciation of our common heritage.

THE SAVANNAH MONUMENT PROJECT

One of the major goals of HAHS is to erect a monument in Savannah, Georgia to honor our forefathers, "Les Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue," a platoon of Haitian soldiers who fought for American Independence at the "Siege of Savannah" in 1779.

The monument will be implemented into two phases by renowned sculptor James Mastin. Phase I will consist of three greater than life size statues representing Chasseurs-Volontaires, including the 12 year old drummer boy Henri Christophe, who became commander of the Haitian army and later King of Haiti. Also, young Christophe was the second head of state in the Western Hemisphere to be of African heritage. Subsequently, Phase II will be constructed to represent the remaining three statues of these Freedom Fighters who fought in the battle.

Pour le COIN DE CARL

SAUVONS L’HONNEUR

Enfin, enfin.

Amo a distancia
