Taking a walk down memory lane, my thoughts kept returning to the words of football great, black-American Jim Brown. “Life is a journey, and you are a fool if you experience it with just your body,” Brown said.
As a columnist, a TV talk show host, a radio commentator in a high-tech era, I find that with the internet the sky is the limit. Cyberspace is a new frontier of information for anyone who wants to become a “nèg save,” a man of substance. There’s no longer the need to turn to the village wise men for knowledge. High level and swift communication on the internet is available to the people of the world and that includes Haitians. No one is isolated anymore. No more reliance for information only from the Haitian government, only from the U.S. government, or for that matter only from any one entity.
The internet rules the world. One has the privilege of being choosy on what one hear and read on cyberspace. How to pick and choose reliable sources? One can begin by searching with the GOOGLE tool on the net which is full of input about anyone or anything. That’s a good way to start. If the information is not on GOOGLE, with all due respect, it’s not worth pursuing. Garbage in, garbage out.
My father was alarmed that at age 15 I was typing all my letters to him instead of writing them by hand. He predicted correctly that my handwriting would suffer, but he could not envision that this simple typing skill, would help me make an easier transition, in years to come, to the computer world of today.
Times are changing. The high-tech world as a tool in communication is a marvel. My pile of 50-year-old paper archives can be put on one small compact disc, instead of accumulating dust and space, but I do not have the heart to dump them in the garbage. Same goes too for the 35 volumes of Britannica Encyclopedia, which I no longer use, because the internet is at the tip of my fingers.
Today, cyber cafes are everywhere in towns like Pétion Ville, Port-au-Prince and St. Marc, Haiti. The number of cyber cafes and Haitians using cell phones in Haiti is a testament to the influence of the digital age. Hi-tech communication is no more a luxury in today’s world economy. It’s part of our daily life.
Since joining WPBR 1340 AM in West Palm Beach, I have not missed one broadcast. Why do I write on the internet, speak on the radio and TV? First of all, it fills a void created by the death of two oldest brothers with whom I had endless think-tank sessions.
Second, having an extended family of nephews and nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces, cousins, etcetera which I jokingly call a tribe, I decided to enlarge the circle to include the listening and reading public which is also my family at large.
When I look at the wealth of news, I realize that it’s an awesome task to be involved in the media industry. In addition to the internet, television and the radio I often have on my desk the New York Times, The Times of London, Le Monde, the Miami Herald, Il Messagero, Pluriel Magazine, Paris Match, Hola, to name a few.
Unless one has the staff of a George W. Bush (and this man is still sadly so limited in his views), one pair of eyes is just not enough to stay abreast of current events.
The internet, radio and TV broadcasts, paper journalism are constantly giving me a fresh perspective on the world. There is no business like NEWS business.
In today’s mobile society, people do not read as much. And when it comes to writing, portable e-mail devices can be conveniently swift, even on cell phone. But, I still like the feeling, once in awhile, of holding a paperback or a newspaper, although I was never great in holding a pen, but I loved my old black and white ROYAL typewriter...an introduction to the computer of today. Different folks, different strokes.
My father, Pierre Isaac Léger, a Graduate Engineer who received degrees in Engineering the Netherlands, and Italy gave me the inspiration to dream. He gave me the fortitude to persist. And he passed along an unwavering desire to build and develop, all qualities, which I have embraced my entire life. I remember in my childhood years going to see him build bridges, canals, roads, dams, and many other things, all to improve the life of the people. In my teen years, I saw him take charge of Public Health as a World Health Organization Expert in Tunisia. Upon graduation, we worked side by side in the development of organizations in Tunisia that dealt with environmental services.
Unlike the complex management theories of today, his professional strategy was based on plain,common-sense principles - hard work, clear vision and value for those he served. Having worked around the world in over seventy (70) countries, I realize that I followed in my fathers footsteps. However, today, with GDC I embark on a journey that my father could never have imagined, the Development of the Island of La Gonave.
As I look around, I see an organization of strong leaders and exceptional individuals, ta-lented and dedicated professionals who continue to put the success of this project and the interest of La Gonave above all others. What has long set us apart is a deep commitment to innovation and an innate ability to tap into the needs and aspirations of the Gonaviens. Throughout GDC, every member makes a significant and measurable contribution and exemplifies our capability to balance economic, social and environmental objectives.

Dr. Mary H. Umolu Sanders: a summum Bonum

Aristotle, in his book on Ethics has described the summum bonum person as someone who has achieved the highest command of individual, social and spiritual virtues. Dr. Mary Umolu who passed away on September 25, 2007 in New York has achieved that distinction.
I came in contact with Dr. Umolu during the eighties when Wilson Désir, the late Haitian Consul in New York, a Haitian Spartacus, and me as well as many others were advocating against the military regimes that succeeded the departure of the Duvaliers. Dr. Umolu opened the door of the Radio Station of Medgars Evers College for the Haitians to rally and to encourage their compatriots to support the struggle at home for the advent of true democracy.
I found out later, that Dr. Umolu was opening the doors for the people from Biafra, Nigeria, from Kosovo, from Greece, from the South of the United States, indeed she was giving a voice to all the voiceless of this world in order to create a more perfect universe where all the children of God would receive the benefits of education, of self determination and of personal growth.
Dr. Umolu was the product of a Southern and of a Caribbean heritage (Jamaica); born in Virginia she came to New York at an early age. She studied at Brooklyn College and at Union University in Cincinnati where she received her doctorate. To introduce herself to the world, she went to Haiti, where she taught English, and she went to Nigeria where she constructed the Eastern Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation espousing the Biafra cause for self governance.
A Professor at Medgar Evers College since 1972, Professor Umolu became the mother of not only the College, but she became the mother of all the people of Brooklyn. She transformed the radio Station of the college into a major community radio that introduced Calypso music, Creole cadence and reggae sounds to the whole Northeast of the United States.
Credit should be given to the President of the College, Dr Edison O Jackson who provided to Dr. Omulu with all the space (sometimes more) and the resources to serve all the constituencies that she keep adopting in the wide circle of “ huddled masses yearning to breath free”.
Dr. Omulu, always in her African attire, was a lover of jazz music, of the sounds of drums and of story telling. She personified the soul of Africa distilling the sweet taste of the mother land to all the children of the world, white or black.
At the viewing ceremony, the President of the College, upon the demand of her students, has accepted to recommend the naming of the Department of Communication in the name of Dr. Omulu.
My request has the signature of a larger impact for a wider audience. I travel often to Atlanta to participate to the parent involvement sessions at Morehouse College where my son is attending as a junior student. I have found Morehouse College a perfect institution for the upbringing of a young black man. Akin to City College that a century ago, took in the Jews that could not attend Harvard College and transform them into the captain of industries all over the world; I dream of a Medgar Evers College transforming itself into a Morehouse of the North, strengthening the scholarship and the character of the black students from the South, and from Jamaica, from Haiti and from Trinidad, from Africa and from Guyana.
Dr. Omulu would be satisfied in her grave with that vision. She will be cherished in the motherland by the natives and by the returnees, in particular by all those who now speak with authority because she has opened the door to teach them how to speak.

Leslie François Manigat et Marc Louis Bazin ont eu tous les deux leur petite percée au pouvoir un peu irrégulièrement , mais ils l'ont eue , leur percée et le pouvoir sur quelques mois.
Comprenez-vous pourquoi, il ne reste presque plus aucun Leader sérieux dans l'Opposition en Haiti ?
Ils ont pris 4 à 5 mois au pouvoir quand ils pouvaient gagner normalement un mandat présidentiel de 5 ans. C'est vrai que : Un tien vaut mieux que 2, tu l'auras. L'un est sûr, l'autre ne l'est pas .

Au Cap-Haitien comme à Port-au-Prince , des riverains savaient monter sur des arbres, comme Zachée qui voulait absolument voir Jésus le Roi des Juifs un jour , pour suivre des matches de Foot-Ball Gratis Ti-Chérie aux abords du Stade du Cap et du Stadium Sylvio Cator de PAP.
La passion incontestable passée pour le Foot-Ball en Haiti.
Il me semble évident que des gens ont sciemment élevé leurs étages et balcons aux abords du Stade Sylvio Cator pour s'offrir tout ce qui se passe au Stade . Des “Dassomen” irréductibles ! Cela ne m'étonnerait pas que certains aillent jusqu'à avoir leurs blocs de ticket d'admission sur leurs balcons au quart des prix au Stade … Saint-Pierre devra être très vigilant aux portes du Ciel !

Je vous l'ai dit, au moins une fois déjà, que je fus aux études en Hollande entre le mardi 5 Février 1980 et le vendredi 4 Février 1983.
Dans cet intervalle , j'ai suivi 2 Cours en Cartographie et en Photogrammétrie grâce à 2 Bourses d'Études du Gouvernement Néerlandais et de l'UNESCO respectivement .
A l'aller comme au retour , je suis passé par New-York vers ou à partir d'Amsterdam avec les décalages horaires , vous le savez ( + ou - 5/6 heures environ ) .
J'étais parti de l'Aéroport JFK le dimanche soir 3 Février 1980 vers 10:00 PM heure de New-York pour arriver à Amsterdam lundi vers 10:00 AM .
Je suis resté quelques bonnes heures à Amsterdam avec mon camarade Léopold Berlanger venu de Delft à ma rencontre à Schiphol Airport . Dans l'après-midi , je pris le train vers Enschede ( 2 heures 30 de voyage ) .
On attendait mon arrivée à la Réception-Accueil du Guest-House de l'ITC ( photo ci-dessus ) . Je remplis un formulaire d'arrivée et de prise d'un studio.
J'eus alors mes clés et montai dans mon studio, vraiment très confortable par rapport à ce que j'ai vu aux Maisons des Étudiants sur l'Avenue Jourdan Cité Universitaire à Paris. Je m'installai rapidement puis redescendis pour découvrir les installations et facilités du Guest-House pour les étudiants, leurs familles et professeurs et autres “guests” de passage . Un “building” de 12 étages dominant largement au sommet la Ville d'Enschede près de la frontière avec l'Allemagne par la petite allemande Gronau où je suis allé souvent par bicyclette ou en autobus avec mon passeport et visa allemand pour des achats de produits allemands comme mon ancien PENTAX analogue.
En bas , je rencontrai la masse des étudiants de tous les pays ce lundi soir au cafeteria-bar-resto interne du Guest-House .
Nous étions en plein hiver …
Vite , des camarades de la Tanzanie, de la Gambie, du Nigeria , du Zaire et du Tchad notamment s'approchèrent de moi en me reconnaissant comme le seul haitien cette année-là à Enschede ITC . Tous ils voulaient que je leur parle des Tontons Macoutes d'Haiti et de Baby Doc.
On jouait à notre grand plaisir Bob Marley au bar du Guest-House : “ No Woman No Cry … No Woman No Cry …”
Il y eut plusieurs boursiers de la Jamaïque . On fraternisa assez rapidement . On se présentait et s'identifiait .
Vite , on fut en confiance internationalement ce soir du lundi 4 Février 1980 .
Rentré dans ma chambre, je sentis la solitude et pensai terriblement à ma famille en Haiti .
Le lendemain, il y eut en tenue de Ville le “Welcome Party” pour notre promotion avec tous les professeurs, le staff administratif , époux et épouses .

BOUD-DHISME :
LES TROIS GRANDES ÉCOLES
La lutte des bonzes contre le régime militaire birman souligne tragiquement la puissance sociale de la vie monastique dans le bouddhisme. Dès la naissance du boud-dhisme dans son berceau de l'Inde - entre les Ve et IVe siècles av. J.-C. - les premiers disciples de Bouddha Shâkyamuni ("l'Eveillé" du clan des Shakya) se rasaient la tête, s'habillaient d'une robe ocre et allaient quêter leur nourriture de maison en maison.
Bouddha a vécu quatre-vingts ans - dont quarante de prédication -, mais n'a jamais nommé de successeur.
Cette absence d'autorité suprême et l'éparpillement des communautés ont donné leur marque au bouddhisme naissant. Son histoire est faite d'une longue série d'emprunts aux traditions locales - chamanisme ou tantrisme hindou -, de divisions et de schismes. Même si les frontières sont poreuses, le bouddhisme se répartit aujourd'hui en trois écoles principales, correspondant à trois zones d'implantation géographique en Asie.
L'ÉCOLE THERAVÂDA
C'est la "voie des Anciens", encore appelée l'"école du Sud", puisqu'elle est implantée dans le sud-est du continent : au Sri Lanka, en Birmanie (où elle s'impose au XIe siècle), au Cambodge, en Thaïlande, au Laos et au Vietnam pour partie seulement (à cause de l'influence chinoise).
Ecole la plus ancienne et la plus proche du bouddhisme primitif, le theravâda - dont les textes sacrés sont en langue pâli - propose un enseignement traditionnel pour avancer sur la "voie de l'Eveil", dont l'étape de perfection ultime (nirvana) se traduit par le dépouillement de tout lien de souffrance ou de désir. L'objectif est de se libérer du samsara, le "cycle des renaissances". Etre sauvé signifie être libéré d'un monde terrestre réduit à des réalités "phénoménales" ou "impermanentes".
Pour ne plus mourir, il ne faut plus renaître... D'où le développement d'une spiritualité, dans le theravâda, du "non-attachement", puissante chez les moines, qui s'interdisent toute activité mondaine. Ils ne travaillent pas, ne reçoivent aucun argent, ne se font pas à manger. Ils sortent chaque matin pour mendier leur nourriture et dépendent intégralement des laïcs. Ils pratiquent de manière radicale le Noble Octuple Chemin ("parole juste, acte juste", etc.) pour développer cette attitude mentale de "non-attachement".
L'ÉCOLE MAHAYANA
Elle est née en Inde au début de l'ère chrétienne. C'est le bouddhisme "du Nord" : celui de la Chine (dès le Ier siècle), du Japon (VIe siècle), de la Corée et d'une partie du Vietnam. Cette réforme de l'enseignement primitif est fondée sur la notion de bodhisattva ("l'être voué à l'Eveil"), c'est-à-dire celui qui renonce à son propre nirvana pour pratiquer au plus haut degré la vertu de don et conduire à la délivrance de tous les êtres. Le bodhisattva accepte de rester dans le "cycle des existences", donc dans le monde de la souffrance, pour vivre une dimension de compassion totale.
L'école mahayana se fait appeler "Grand Véhicule", par opposition à l'école theravâda, qu'elle qualifie d'une notion péjorative : le "Petit Véhicule", soupçonné de ne chercher que le salut individuel. Entre les deux écoles, la dimension intérieure change, mais la vie monastique est presque identique. Dans la tradition mahayana, la figure du moine est moins idéalisée que dans la première. En Chine et au Japon par exemple, des moines se font à manger, ce qui est une hérésie pour un moine theravâda, birman ou sri-lankais. Dans tous les cas, les moines ne font pas de voeux perpétuels (puisque le monde est "impermanent"). Ils entrent et sortent du monastère, lieu de l'initiation de la plupart des jeunes.
L'ÉCOLE VAJRAYANA
Elle est aussi appelée "Véhicule du diamant", ou "Véhicule des formules" (mantrayana), ou "bouddhisme tantrique" (tantrayana, inspiré des tantras hindous, mot qui signifie "ouvrages explicatifs").
Il s'agit ici du bouddhisme tibétain, très minoritaire dans le bouddhisme mondial, mais le plus connu et pratiqué en Occident. L'école du "diamant" (le diamant est le symbole de la force qui détruit les illusions) est née également dans le nord de l'Inde et s'est développée, entre les IIIe et Ve siècles, au Tibet, en Mongolie et au Bhoutan.
Elle emprunte aux deux précédentes écoles, pénétrant même le "Grand Véhicule" de Chine et du Japon. Le zen japonais (chan en chinois), également connu et pratiqué aux Etats-Unis et en Europe, incorpore, par exemple, des éléments tantriques, ces techniques d'invocation de divinités et de récitation de formules rituelles, capables de provoquer une "transmutation" intérieure. Le but est d'acquérir l'état d'éveil dès cette vie, et non sur un parcours étendu à de nombreuses existences. Le maître spirituel (guru) y tient une place essentielle.
Ce bouddhisme a inspiré au Tibet un système théocratique fondé, depuis le milieu du XVIIe siècle, sur le pouvoir des lamas ("maîtres"). Le dalaï-lama est le maître dont la sagesse est aussi vaste que l'océan (dalaï). L'actuel dalaï-lama, Tenzin Gyatso, a dû quitter son pays occupé par les Chinois en 1959.
